[Lorenzo de Zavala, New York, to Joel R. Poinsett, May 9, 1835, stat_ing that he arrived in the U.S. on ~lay 4 and may move to Texas to live, and Lhat he believes Sanla Anna will fall from power. J [4335) [SWARTOUT to HOUSTON]
New York 12th September 1835
My Dear Houslon, ~Ir. Fortune arrived about a week ago and handed me your welcome letter of the 20th July. I am not a little afraid, for the first time however, that Monsieur Carbajal is going to turn out to be what you pronounced him, a d - d rascal. We may work the Lad through though I think, with your Law Knowledge and Col Thorne's prompt action. You say that Thorne told you he would put the morlgage on record the day you wrote. If he did and you and he will let it along there, I think a year or two will do the business for the Mexican genlleman. I would not have you sue him or foreclose, but just let il remain on mortgage. I wish you could inform me if it has been recorded or not; and if not, that you could press upon Col Thorne the necessity of doing it and then let it lay. I shall have your stones considerably cut and otherwise altered and I firmly hope entirely for your improvement. There was no measure of your finger found in your letter, .I ~hall therefore, wait till J receive it. As lo the War between the greal Santa Anna and the little place called Texas, I do not believe a word of it. You will submit like men to his decrees and slripes - and that will save ye all!
