[ZAVALA to POINSETT]

[ Lorenzo de Zavala, Galveston Bay, to Joel R. Poinsett, October 16, 1836, discussing the problems of revolutionary government and his problems with President Burnet: "I was unable lo make myself heard and poor Burnet believed that composing notes and letters himself like and office clerk, would suffice very well."] [4320] [IlROWN to WILLIAMS]

New York, Oct. 17, 1836

Sarni .M. Williams Esq.

According to my orders from the Secretary of the Navy, I repaired to the Port for the purpose of making necessary repairs, shipping men, &c. On my arrival I found the Brutus here without money to pay off her men, but after much difficulty sufficient was raised to satisfy them. l\fr. Ellis & others have aided the Brutus, but for the Invincible the whole duty of procuring funds has devolved on myself, and I have been compelled to pledge my honor to indemnify my friends before I leave the Port. An Officer has been on board the Ilrulus & has had charge of her and the same would have been the result with my vessel had I not have found personal friends. I am anxious to go on a cruise, and not so far disgrace the service as to be obliged to bond the vessel here and take out passengers lo defray the expenses. I am waiting anxiously for you, write me as soon as possible that I may know what to do. Please address me to the care of Charles D. Sayre, Esq. & much oblige · Yours &C Jercmiah Brown Comr. Sehr.
