Parish priest in Archdiocese of Lyons, 1844-46; came to Texas 1846 to work in the Diocese of Galveston; pioneer priest, 1846-1862; appointed to See of Galveston October 1 5, 1862 ; consecrated in Seminary Chapel of Lyons by Archbishop John Mary Odin, C.M., just promoted the Arch- diocese of New Orleans, assisted ·by Archbishop Armand Francois Marie, Comte de Charbonnel, and Bishop Jean Paul Lyonnet, of Valence; re- signed administration of Diocese of Galveston, keeping the title, July 12, 1881; appointed Titular Archbishop of Arca, December 16, 1892; died May 21, 1895 at Vernaison, France. Pierre and Francoise (Galey) Dufal; student Seminary and Novitiate of Lemans, France. 1848-52; ordained in Blois September 29, 1853 by Bishop Louis Teophile Pallu du Pare; taught in seminaries in France and America, 1853-1860, until assigned to missionary field in India as pro-Vicar of Dacca; appointed Titular Bishop of Deleon July 3, 1860 and named Vicar-Apostolic of Eastern Bengal; consecrated November 25, 1860 at Le Mans; elected superior general, Order of the Holy Cross, August 15, 1866; resigned March 20, 1868 to return to India; transferred to Galveston, Texas, as Coadjutor of Bishop Dubuis, cum jure stucessiones, May 14, 1878; re- signed April 2, 1879 effective December 9, 1879; died in Paris March 15, 1898. Chicago, Ill.; St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, Md., ordained June 29, 1871, St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, by Bishop Thomas Andrew Becker, of Wilmington, Del. Worked in various parishes in Diocese of Chicago, 1871-93; preco- nized Bishop of Dallas, October 22, 1893 after his appointment to the diocese, September 24, 1893; consecrated in All Saints Church, Chicago, November 30, 1893 by Archbishop Patrick Augustine Feehan, of Chi- cago; installed January 17, 1894; built Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Dallas, Texas, besides many other churches; died at Green Bay, Wis., while on visit, August 5, 1910; buried in Chicago.
