BRENNAN, D.D., Rt. Rev. Thomas Francis, First Bishop of Dallas. B. Bally Cullen, Tipperary, Ireland, October 10, 1955; s. James and Margaret (Dunne) Brennan; student St. Bonaventure's school, Alle- gheny, New York; Rouen University, France, 1873; University of Inns- bruck, Austria, D.D. 1876. Ordained at Brixen, Austria, July 4, 1880 by Prince Bishop John de Leiss of Brixen; exercised his ministry in diocese of Erie, Pennsylvania, 1884-91 : Greenville, Du Bois, Frenchville and other parishes; Papal Chamberlain January 11, 1888. Upon the erection of the Diocese of Dallas, July 15, 1890 was appointed first bishop of Dallas January 9, 1891; consecrated April 5, 1891 by Bishop Tobias Mullen, of Erie; installed in Dallas, Texas, March 8, 1891 in pro-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart; resigned, November 17, 1892 while on ad limina visit; named Titular Bishop of Utilla February 1, 1893; appointed Auxiliary to Bishop T. J. Power, D.D., of St. John's, Newfoundland; recalled to Rome; named Titular Bishop of Caesarea in Mauretania, October 7, 1905; retired to Monastery of Grottoferrata; died March 21, 1916. BROWN, S.J., D.D., Rt. Rev. John J., First Bishop elect of El Paso. Little known of this gentle, retiring man of God. Preconized January 2, 1915; resigned June 16, 1915; retired from Texas shortly afterward; lived quietly many years at St. Mary's, Kansas; died February 21, 1947, age 81. BYRNE, D.D., Most Rev. Christopher Edward, Fourth Bishop of Galveston. B. Byrnesville, Jefferson County, Missouri, April 21, 1867; s. Patrick and Rose (Byrne) Byrne; student St. Mary's College, Kansas, and St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, Maryland. Ordained September 23, 1891, St. Louis, by Archbishop Peter Richard Kendrick, of St. Louis; stationed St. Bridget's Church, St. Louis, 1891- 1897; Columbia, Mo., 1897-1900; rector Edina, Mo., 1900-1911; Holy Name Church, St. Louis, Mo., 1911-1918; appointed Bishop of Galveston July 18, 1918; consecrated November IO, 1918, St. Louis Cathedral by Archbishop John Joseph Glennon, assisted by Bishop Thomas Francis [477]
