The first published pamphlet was utilized to sponsor the "Texas His- torical Prize Essay Contest," with the purpose to interest all Catholic students of the State in the study of Texas history. The Commission offered a prize, totalling twenty-five dollars, for the best two essays based on Foik's illartyrs of tlee Soz1,t/vwest, or the contestants were at liberty to submit an account of the Participati.on of Catleolics in tlee Struggle for Texas Independence. This theme was chosen in anticipation of the cen- tennial observance of Texas Independence to be held in 1936. The College student prize in this contest was won by Miss Henrietta Newcomb, Incar- nate Word College, San Antonio; and the High School prize was awarded to Ambrose Irvin, St. Mary's School, Amarillo, Texas. Both contestants based their essays on Father Foik's published work. At the beginning of 1931 to encourage again more interest in the aims of the Commission, a prize-winning contest was sponsored, offering a prize of twenty-five dollars for the best essay on the early Irish of Texas. Unfortunately the response was negligible, no essays were considered complete enough, and the prize was not bestowed.
