made possible the spread and growth of missions in Texas also includes the contributions of the most recent national organization created by the Hierarchy in 1920. At the national meeting of the Hierarchy of the United States held in 1920, a committee was appointed to set up a consolidated agency that would bring together the various missionary activities of the Catholic Church in the United States. The result was the organization of the American Board of Catholic Missions at a meeting held in Cincinnati, Ohio, of that year. The Board was originally consti- tuted by the Archbishops of Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia, and the Bishops of Omaha and Pittsburgh. In 1950, His Eminence, Samuel Cardinal Stritch, of Chicago, became the chairman, the Board members being, the Most Reverend John F. Noll, D.D., Bishop of Fort Wayne, Indiana, treasurer; the Most Reverend William D. O'Brien, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, secretary ; the Most Reverend Richard J. Cushing, D.D., Archbishop of Boston; the Most Reverend Joseph E. Ritter, D.D., Archbishop of St. Louis; the Most Reverend Paul C. Schulte, D.D., Archbishop of Indianapolis; the Most Reverend William A. Griffin, D.D., Bishop of Trenton; the Most Reverend William F. Murphy, D.D., Bishop of Saginaw; the Most Reverend Karl J. Alter, D.D., Bishop of Toledo; the Most Reverend Ralph L. Hayes, D.D., Bishop of Davenport; the Most Reverend l\'latthew F. Brady, D.D., Bishop of Manchester; and the Most Reverend Stanislaus V. Bona, D.D., Bishop of Green Bay. The American Board of Catholic Missions has contributed from 1925 to 1951, for the purpose of promoting missionary activities and the spread and preservation of the faith in Texas the splendid total of $1,577,741.47, as follows:
