Frenchmen predominated, although it is of interest to note that there were a few Englishmen among them at this early date. 41 Mission Rosario, near the presidio at La Bahia, was abandoned for a few years, but in 1788 an effort was made to reestablish it. By July, 1790, it had progressed slightly. On July 2 of that year the mis- sionary reported that there were 45 Indians living in the mission and that 79 others were expected to return in October. These had gone away on account of lack of food. When the crops were harvested and some of the mission cattle were rounded up in the fall, there would be sufficient supplies to enable these Indians to come to live permanently in the mission. 41 By 1794, Mission Rosario had 139 neophytes registered. Of this number 100 had been Christianized and civilized, and 39 were still receiving instruction when Governor Mufi.oz visited the mission. 49 At the same time Mission Espiritu Santo reported it had 35 J aranames, 19 Tamiques, 18 Parantones, 12 Prietos, 9 Brazos Largos (Long arms), 6 Vende Flechas (Arrow Peddlers), and 12 Campusas, a total of II 1. 50 The captain of the Presidio of Nuestra Senora de Loreto complained on August 26, 1791, that the presidio chapel was in dire need of more decent articles for the church and solicited from the viceroy one red and one white set of vestments for the celebration of Mass. The request was approved by Viceroy Revillagigedo, who ordered that the vestments should be bought by the royal treasurer and sent to La Bahia. By the end of the year the presidia! chapel had received the two vestments which cost one hundred and seven ,pesos. 51 "Ibid., Vol. VI, pp. 230-234.
