the gallows; and that those proved guilty of spreading false rumors calculated to create panic would be tried for criminal malice and pun- ished according to their deserts. 101 The storm had at last broken upon the heads of the frontier officials. The end of the Spanish regime was at hand. But it will be well to take stock of conditions in Texas on the eve of Mexico's War for Inde- pendence before treating of that struggle.
