was expected momentarily. In fact, the instructions to Mr. Laussat were that he transfer the province to the representative of the United States the same day he received it officially from Spain, but Laussat chose to exercise sovereignty for twenty days. Not until December 20, 1803, was the transfer to the United States to take place. At that time, one of the American commissioners was the sinister General James Wilkinson, who was to be so closely and luridly associated with events on the Spanish- American frontier during the next few years.
