tion of his permit. He claimed at that time that he had been baptized a Catholic. The king on April 5 ordered his arrest and deportation to Havana. Calbert evidently learned of his impending doom and started for Nacogdoches shortly after his release, because on September 3, 1796, Nava asked iVlunoz to send a detachment to take him into custody before he reached the frontier. 94 In the meantime Nacogdoches had been placed in as good a state of defence as possible. In January, 1795, Nava inquired from Munoz if sickness or some other cause had prevented Bernardo Fernandez from assuming command at Nacogdoches. If he was still unable to take over, Manuel Espadas of La Bahia was to be sent to take charge temporarily. The urgency of filling this position brooked no delay. Munoz replied that Fernandez was already in Nacog- doches with a detachment of twenty men, as ordered on November 21, 1794. Fernandez remained in Nacogdoches until September, 1795, when he was replaced by Jose Maria Guadiana. Nava had promoted Fernandez to a captaincy in the light cavalry. Munoz had been asked to send Francisco Amangual to replace Fernandez, but his illness prevented the execution of the order. 96 Guadiana informed Nava in October, 1796, that he had taken charge of the garrison. He remained in command until May, 1799, when he was replaced by Jose del Moral from La Bahia, who had been ordered to Nacogdoches in March, but had been unable to leave until Captain Francisco Xavier de Uranga arrived. Guadiana had been accused of laxness in enforcing the laws on contraband trade and the introduction of foreigners. He was reprimanded in the fall of 1798, and although he had promised in January, I 799, to observe his instructions more care- fully, Nava decided that a change was advisable.
