was, nevertheless, reported to the secretary of the king by Viceroy Revil- lagigedo as a matter of record. 69 Curate Francisco Gomez Moreno appears to have been replaced soon thereafter by Bacliiller Jose Clemente Arocha, who on April II, 1793, signed a receipt for an altar, a copper baptismal font, a silver baptismal shell, a silver ciborium, and a host mold. These had been obtained from the secularized Mission of San Antonio de Valero for the chapel that had been set up in the old mission headquarters for the company of troops from El Alamo. 70 Early in 1793, Bishop de Llanos y Valdez took charge of the diocese of Nuevo Leon, the seat of which was in Monterrey, and in which Texas was included. He died in December. 1799, and was succeeded temporarily by Miguel Ignacio de Zarate who was appointed vicar. 71 Recognition bestowed on curate of San Antonio. Towards the close of the century Father Gabino Valdez was the curate of San Antonio. A native of Saltillo, he had attained fame on the frontier outposts of New Spain for his eloquence. In July, 1800, he asked permission to absent himself for a week in September so as to attend a commemorative feast being celebrated in Saltillo, where he was to deliver the principal sermon. Governor Elguezabal readily granted the request and Nava, when informed, heartily approved the action. 7 : Fixing tlee time for 1J1ass. It seems that complaints were made to Commandant General Nava concerning the irregularity of the time at which Mass was said for the soldiers and the settlers in San Antonio on Sundays and feast days. At this time the curate was also the chaplain of the garrison stationed at San Antonio de Bexar. Nava wrote Governor Elguezabal that Mass should be said at the same hour on Sundays and feast days.
