entered the province without permission. It was important, the friar declared, to determine their status and religion. 14 Guadiana promptly furnished him a list of persons living east of the Sabine River, explaining that he had prepared it with the aid of the oldest settlers of the abandoned post of Los Adaes, who had assured him that the jurisdiction of Nacogdoches extended to the old limits of Los Adaes. He asked the Padre to make further inquiries from officials in San Antonio concerning this matter, as he was anxious to know if the actual limits between the two provinces had been defined. He hoped Vallejo would check the list and urge the settlers to perform their Easter duty as all subjects of His Catholic Majesty were expected to. 15 The list included Pablo Lafitte and Andres Valentin, on Arroyo Piedras; Jose Gavina, on Llano de las Cebollas; Pedro Dolet and Antonio Dubois, on Arroyo Cristal; Francisco Prudhome, in the Adaes Pueblo; Francisco Morban, on Arroyo Durazno; the widow Tutin, on Arroyo Tepalcate; Manuel Prudhome and MorfU, on Arroyo Hondo; Rouguier, on Adaes Lake; Francisco Rouguier, on Laguna Purita; Jose Piernas, on the ranch of Santa Maria de Adelaida; and Sam, the Englishman, on Arroyo de San Francisco. 16 While the list is evidently not complete, judging from the statement of Father Vallejo, still it is of interest. Guadiana inquired from Governor Munoz concerning the boundary between Texas and Louisiana, but the governor failed to answer, for there was no definition in the archives of San Antonio. 17 Before the end of the year the assistant of Father Vallejo suffered a nervous breakdown. Father Pedro Portugal appears to have become deranged on May 7. He was kept under surveillance for a day or two, but finding his condition did not improve, Father Vallejo decided it would be best to send him to San Jose. Guadiana furnished an escort of five soldiers and a corporal, and Father Vallejo appointed Jose de la Vega, notary public, to look after the sick missionary while on the road. 18 Reenforcement and improvements at La BaMa.
