ing the most exposed frontier provinces of Louisiana and Texas were likewise forgotten and were as nothing- compared with his one mistake. 30 To the ple:Lc; of the Junta and of the deputies of Texas, Don Nemesio turned a deaf car. But to Manul'I Sakedo, his own nephew, who had been the heart and soul of the counterrevolution in Coahuila, who ha.cl conceived the plan for the capture of the le:ulers of the rebellion, and carried it to a successful execution at Baj:in, Don Nemesio refused all public recognition. Instead of granting- the rcqul'St of the Junta and its deputies, he sent Simon Herrcra in July, 1811, to assume the duties of governor ad interim of Texas.s• Manuel Salcedo yearned for public vindication. lle felt, and rightly so, that a long life of faithful service and unswerving- loyalty, and his services in quelling the rebellion had atoned for his one mistake. Rut his uncle was obdurate. Perhaps he was unduly severe because of the rela- tionship which existed between himself and the ex-Governor of Texas. Governor Manuel Salcedo specifically asked him to forget the fact that he was his uncle and to consider his case objectively and strictly on its merits. Late in July or early in August Don Nemesio ordered his nephew to proceed to Monclova by way of Mapimi and Haciencla de San Lorenzo to await further instructions. A messenger overtook him at Mapimi, Durango, with an order that should have made him happy. He was in- structed to proceed not to Haciencla de San Lorenzo, but to Monclova. There he was to leave his troops and take only a small guard to accompany him to Texas. Upon his arrival he was to take over the government of the province.u Don Manuel immecliatcly replied that he would march as rapidly as possible to Monclova and on to Bexar, hut that he would postpone taking 10 Manuel Salcedo to Commandant General Nemcsio Salcedo, Novemher 4, 1811, 1/islnria, O-j,er"cin11es de Cuerm, Aiins de 1R10 y 1812, vol. 1, pt. 1, A.
