PAPERS OF MIRABEAU BuoNAPARTE LAMAR
the Government of Nicaragua that if Com. P. did actually a great service to that Republic and people by ridding the country of W allcer & followers, that it would be only a simple act of justice to address him a letter, (thro either their Minister at Washington or President Martinez, stating their gratitude and sustaining him in landing troops on her territory, as the object was not to harm Nicaragua, but solely to render her a great service. It seems to me this would stop all talk about "invasion of Nicaraguan soil" etc, which now is so loudly harped upon by certain parties, and, place Commodore Paulding's act prop- erly before the whole world. I should like to know your opinion about this qu~tion. Captain Sands, wishes to be remembered to you, and so does Capt. Almy of the Fulton who is again here. Both are in good health. I will send you some newspapers by the Coreo, though I suppose you have already your supply via Panama & San Juan del Sur. There is nothing of any importance here to communicate.
