Jose Menchaca - was a brave, & violent man, much distinguished for his firmness; and when drinking would loose sight of all prudence, & fight, priests, alcaldes or captains as it came in the way - Delgado Manuel Delgado, lived in Bexar. He had 5 sons, Miguel, Jose, Manuel Antonio, Francisco, & Ynacio - They all joined the Liberals in the Revolution. The father & 3 of the sons were overtaken at the Trinity after the Battle of Madina and killed; the other two others [sic] Jose Manuel was killed by the Indians, and Miguel died a nat- ural death - Juan Sanbrano - was not a full priest, but was authorised to say Mass - He was a padra and Capt. He also had the command of Col. in the Army - 1817 & 18 he was attached to the army, com- manding at LaBihia - he was a brave man - He could act in any capacity, that required talents, bravery or address - In 18'23 - Trespelacios came from Mexico - Iturbede then in power - Trespelacios, attached to the interest of Iturbede, secretly desired to re-establish the aristocratic or monarchial Govent under the name of the plan of Echavarri. Sanbranan took the lead against it; run Trespelacios out. of the country - Sanbrana now governed the City himself with a County Council; but was made prisoner for this high handed measure, & carried to Chichuaha where he made his escape & returned to Bexar - He was corpulant weighing 300 fair skin and blue eyes - Antonio Menchaca, was born in Bexar, .His family came from Spain, and were the earliest settlers of Bexar - Antonio was in many indian fights; was alwais on the side of liberal principles, and was an officer at the Battle of San Jacinto, where he distinguished himself, for his devotion to the cause & by his personal bravery - The first name of Sanantonio de Bexar was San Fernando de Austria. This name was changed to its present one, by Don Felix Calleja, Virrey que vino de Espana a Mexico. Viceroy of Mexico. On the Alamo side of the river the town was called Alamo San An- tonio de Bexar. On the other side, the town was called San Fer- nando de Austria - Calleja when he was appointed viceroy, gave to the whole town the name of St. An. de Bexar - I could not understand :Menchaca in his statement about the names of Bexar having no interpetin - No. 2569 1858 Jan. 1 N.
