1857 Sept. 4, R. FITZPATRICK, GALVESTON, [TEXAS] TO M. B. LAMAR, [RICHMOND, TEXAS]2 3 Galveston 4th. Sept. 1857 Genl. M. B. Lamar Dear Sir, I am informed that }'OU have been appointed Minister Resi- dent to the Argentine Confederation, and as I am somewhat acquainted in that part of the world from an experience of recent date, I take pleasure in giving you such information as came under my observa- tion while I was in that Country - You will find the scat of Government of the Argentine Confederation at Parana a very small town on the Parana River, about 600 miles from the mouth of the La Plata River. It is a Town of no importance whatever either in a political or Commercial point of view, unless future events may develop its hidden resources. Very few persons reside there, except during the Session of the Congress of the States of the Confederation. The surrounding Country produces very little for the Consumption of the Town, Consequently the living, as well as the rents are eno:i:mously high; in fact, you will have to carry with you whate,·er you may require to live on, as the Gountry thereabouts produces only inferior beef and very few vegetables, and it will be a matter of necessity to carry with you a liberal supply of the substantial articles of eating and drinking - It is a prevalent opinion in the United States that the Gov- ernnwnts of Buenos Ayres, and the Argentine Confederation are con- necte<l, but this is not the case, and there is little probability that they will erer be con11eeted, as a most bitter hostility exists between them - I hare a map of that whole Country, which was published by Sir \Yoodbine Parish who was for many years the British Charge des aff11ires at Buenos Ayres, and who published a history of that Coun- try, whieh work, Cannot be procured in the United States, but at Bm•nos Ayres you can get it at any of the Book Stores. It will be very useful to you In a word my dear General you will find when you
