well afford to work on in spite of the falsehood and abuse heaped on us by a corrupt and venal press. Living ever in the "Great Task- master's Eye," our motives and conduct are to be judged by one less fallible than man; and with all humility we abide the judgment of Him who cannot err. Hoping you will do what you can to spread correct ideas concerning matters in Central America, . I remain, your obedient servant, WILLIAM WALKER. CHARLES J. JENKINS, Esq., Augusta, Ga. LAMAR, [RICHMOND, TEXASJ 19 Austin Sepf 3, 1857 Dear Sir Since writing 20 you in reference to the news paper publication of which I spoke, I have succeeded in getting hold of the paper which I understand from Quintero was placed in your hands - The man- ner in which the publication appears (bei'ng copied from a Louis- iana paper) as well as the gross perversion of facts it contains re'luiries I think a public notice - I have accordingly written for the News a card which is too long to be copied in this letter. B. Shaw Edwd Clark - James Willie - James H Raymond S. Crosby - John )far- shall -" This was signed about the middle of May - The form of the recom- mendation except that portion which speaks of qualification was sent to Shaw by Reily in a letter, which letter I have read - There is no allusion in the letter to yourself or any one else as being an applicant for any mission whatever - when I wrote you I was not able (as I said) to speak positively for Shaw - I have since conversed with him- He regrets the matter as much as any one possibly could, alluded to your long continued friendship for him, and says unhesitatingly that
