with the rest of my creditors without much difficulty :-As a matter of course, I have no right to require any friend to incur risk or hazard of pecuniary loss on my account; I do not mean to do it; but where a favor can be extended which will relieve the recipient from great embarassment and mental distress, without inflicting the slightest in jury to him who grants it, I think there can be no impropriety in soliciting it. I ask this favor because my.whole happiness is involved in it. - It may be a small affair with you, but it is one of vital im portance to me. It will relieve me from a mountain of miseries - restore my peace of mind - and secure a little repose for me between this and the grave. - Should it suit you to concede to the proposi tion you can name the mode and manner in which it shall be carried into execution. Whatever is done, must be done quickly, as I shall have to accept or decline the appointment of Minister without much further delay. Write me at Macon Geo. · Yours Sincerely M. B. Lamar No. 2521 1857 July 20, [M. B. LAMAR], MACON, GEORGIA TO H. COBB, [WASHINGTON, D. C.] 18 Macon Geo. 20th July 1857. Hon. Howell Cobb. Dear Sir, I see my appointment as Minister to the Argentine Confederation, announced in the Washington Union of the 18th inst -. When will my presence in the Capital be re quired? - Before proceeding upon the Mission, it will be indispensi ble for me to repair to Texas with a view to settle my affairs there preparatory to my leaving. How much time will be allowed me for this purpose? Anxious to conform myself to the wishes of the Gov ernment, I shall use all diligence poss_ ible in arranging for my speedy departure.- Nevertheless, as my pecuniary affairs are in a somewhat tangled condition, it would suit me not to be too much hurried in their settlement. Whatever is desired, however, shall be done. I only wish to know, - what course I have to pursue - what is the custom in such cases - and the longest time that can be allowed me for the pur pose expressed. I seek the information from you, privately and unoffi cially, in preference to applying directly to the Secretary of State, as I have not yet recd. any communication from that Dept. -

[Endorsed] Mr Cobb - from Genl Lamar July 20/57
