I have just received the appointment of Minister to the Argentine Confederation, which I am extremely desirous to accept; but which I will not be able to do, unless I can make some arrange ments with my creditors, among whom you are the most considerable. I wish therefore, to propose to you to receive Lands in payment for what I owe you. - If there is any possibility of making this arrange ment with you, I can only say that the Lands may be selected by your agent out of any that I own (except my farm, which I am desirous to retain until I can get a proper fence for it) and at a valuation which shall secure you from the possibility of loss. If left to me to make the selection, I will choose the best, have it valued by honest men, and then take for it one-half of the price they may fix upon it. - I am not willing that you should suffer the slightest loss in the matter, or even to run the least risk of loss, on the contrary, I will make such terms as every body shall say that the operation is a profit able and advantageous one to you: If I can effect this I can arrange
