Dear Genl.

I enclose you a statement 01 from Mr Durham of the Comp troller's Dept, dated in May last - in reference to the expenditures in your administration - It was handed to me a few days ago, by Lewis Washington - For fear you may not have seen Houston's reply to your self & Burnet I lend the Civilian containing it - No other paper here published it, and it fell still born here - It's vulgar tone throughout disgusts every body - and the reply to your direct & manly charge of cowardice, is as low a peice of shuffling as I have -ever seen - G B L is anxious to see your article - on the debt - and suggests that you should address it to Rusk - I agree with him as it will ,afford you a good opportunity to give Rusk an ironical chastisement, and at the same time hold him accountable for the consequences - Tell him he must go to the Legislature, & use his influence to save the honor of the state, which is more important than the Pacific rail :road, which he went to Austin to Logroll through at the last session - and that he can never build the Pacific R R until he first pays the -debt. - I was at Lynchburg last week, & Judge Burnet told me he had writ ten 92 to you & got no answer - He is busy arranging for the _pamphlet, 0 3 which by being ready for the next Congress will Rile Hous ton dead - G B L writes that one more such blow, at the right time, will finish him - Dont think of any personal attack upon Houston - he will make capital out of it wait till you have published the pam phlet, & then if you think there is any thing left of him, I will stand by you, while you thrash him - but a personal attack upon him now, will give him just the opportunity he wants to change the issue, & get rid of the discussion Rebecca is not well - Caz [ ?] goes to school & is learning french very well -present me to Mrs L most kindly & to Mrs Redd if she is with you -

In haste

truly yours

H McLeod
