Lamar Dear Sir [First three paragraphs purely personal] I suppose you have by this time seen the Texas. Almanac for 1860 - perhaps you have read the historical Compact- and you will recognise the author - what .do you think of it - If it be not true, I shall lament it - If it be true, why is it that it makes no im- pression and where. The old adage "truth is mighty &c" cannot be correct in these times of deluded and ignorant popular Sovereignty - thank God, I never was a democrat - and never can be - Every day's experience admonishes me of its utter fallacy - but I must close. I beg you will remember me very kindly to Mrs. Lamar - to Mrs. Alexander and my young friend Carrie - I can't say how soon I may avail myself of the kind invitation - very truly Yours &c David G Burnet No. 2796 1859 Dec. 15, JA[ME]S H.
