the matter, he will blend with law and justice, all the humanity and moderation which the case may require. - When you arrive at San Jose, send for General Canas - Secretary of War - and talk with him. He is truly a good man; whom I like much, and I doubt not will sene you as far as it may be in his power. - Before I depart, I will send a few dollars to the two Germans imprisoned with you, for aiding in your escape. They are no doubt in a pretty destitute con- dition; allll may suffer for the want of a few comforts. - I sincerely hope that no serious evil may come to them, on account of their friend- ship to one who is uot their countryman. By the way, you must be punctual in paying Mr Brix - the Hotel keeper, for the provisions he may send you, as long as your money holds out; and when it fails, you must speak frankly to him upon the subject, and satisfy him of your disposition to pay him, whenever you shall be able to do so. He is liberal and kind and will let you have what you need; but you must not be extravigant. He will not object to, your reserving some of your funds to take with you to San ,Jose; but you must explain the matter to him. I write-as you will perceive from the careless dic- tion - in exceeding haste; and must now beg leave in conclusion, to reiterate my most solemn injunction to abstain from the use of all kinds of intoxicating drinks. Among your papers you will find the passcport extended to me by General Jose Mana Canas after the capitulation of Rivas - :My rights t~ protection as an American citizen are again qu~stioned, the paper mentioned above is of the utmost importance to me at this moment, I desire therefore that you will do me the kind- ness to send me the document under cover to the Consul of the United States or deposit it with Mr Cass at the State Department at Wash- ington, at your option - The only news of interest is that Jerez has arrived, Zeledon will probably resign office in his (J erez's) favor, Congress will meet on the 15th inst in extra session - Belly and his engineers etc etc have· left I doubt much whether he ever returns - There is a serious revolution going on in Honduras, it is directed against the Govmt of Salvador - that Govmt has obtained the assis~ce of Guatemala, Nicaragua & Costa Rica sympathetic with her but will not lend active aid - There is a rumor that Guatemala
