The President is just and even indulgent, but the responsi- bilities of his high position demand of him a close regard to propriety, not only in fact but form, in our national representation abroad and I entreat you to think of this and refute your enemies and his by your whole line of life I have written to my amiable and much loved friends, Mrs Lamar and her sister, to re-assure them and to enclose some articles of defence and explanation Permit me to say also that it was an error to part with such a true friend and accomplished secretary as Debrin. He was necessary and might have done much to put the business of your mission - the Nicaragua treaty for example - on a better footing I am glad to be able to say that Gen. Jerez does all he can to check these attacks on you and in fact they need not give you any uneasiness if you will but establish yourself suitably, and so present a public and conclusive evi- dence of their absurdity There is a very bitter feeling growing up throughout the country in consequence of the non-ratification of the treaty - just such a feel- ing in short as will turn the whole people towards filibustering, and irritate them into a privateer war with England when the world is least looking for it. Gen Cazneau begs to be remembered as always the same warm and devoted friend in which I need not say he is cor- dially joined by his wife J. M. Cazn.eau No. 2732 1859 Feb. 17, H. General Mirabeau B. Lamar Leon Dear Sir

Mr. Field informed me of your safe arrival, and that you are in want of a certain article from the "El Centro-Americano. - I am sure that since December, the time I arrd. here last, I have seen no such article as you mention in your letter. Since you have gone I have pulled the wires strongly. - The senate has sent to the Government, inquiring of the present state of the Cass-Irrizarri Treaty is in. - No answer has yet been given. - My Rivas friends Pedro Chamorro and Elizondo have made a motion in Congress to put all business aside, which does not refer to treaty and Transit Matters. - The Senate has passed to day a decree of high importance: giving the Government power to declare the Transit free. - The Greaser Company is all gone to thunder The English Treaty is yet in the hands of the Comittee. I think it will be discussed in the Senate in a day or two. -
