PAPERS OF :'.\IIR.\llE . .\U Bl:OXAPATITE LAMAR

for you at :Managua, and which you had deli,·ered to the l\Iinister Cortes. I have taken out of it a new copy which I enclose now - because no better occasion has presented itself, before this time, to forward it to Costa Rica. I think that in a few passages there is a slight alter- ation of words in the copy from which I ha\·e taken the one I send. I do not know. Consul Priest's letter to me, with your kind Postscrip- tion, dated San Juan del Sur, Septber. the 2d., reached me at Leon only about the 23d. of said month . . with the ENORMOUS postage of 65 cents . . a very heavy one for such a speedy com- munication. Your letter dated S. Jose Septber. 18th. and enclosed within another directed to "Mr Deshon - Acting Viceconsul at Realejo -" ought to have come to the hands of said Mr. Deshon on the 23d. Sepber. but he only got it on the 4th. or 5th. of October and he has no doubt that the letter has been detained, opened, examined, and resealed, as the marks of such curious proceedings are plainly visible on the envelope. Of course as the Columbus was already gone neither Mr Deshon nor I have been able to give you an answer before now. I suppose that the copy I send you today will reach San Jose too late. for you to make use of it. Consul Priest received on the 11th. day of September the package you had forgotten or lost at Leon before your departure, as I haYe been told; I suppose therefore that long before this time through the exertion of Mr. Priest you have come again in possession of your miscarried papers and have had the doe:ument already copied and presented - but as I have no certainty of all this, and as you have twice requested me for said copy I have deemed it was my duty to follow your orders without interpretating [sic] them. Dear Genl. I will write to you separately, to morrow, by this same steamer another letter 22 - on private affairs - please to inform you of its arrival at San Jose - in order to ascertain whether it reaches or not its destination I am, Sir, very respectfully and ,·ery affectionately Your most obedient
