Nicaragua will be held responsible for the outrages perpetrated upon Caleb Thurlow. This done and protested in the port of San Juan del Sur this 10th. day of August 1.858. In testimony whereof these appealans have here- unto subscribed their names and I. the said Consul have granted to Caleb Thurlow this public instrument under my hand and the seal of this Consulate to serve and avail him and all others whom it doth or may concern as need and occassion may require -

On the 10th. day of august in the year of one thousand eight hun- dred an fifty eight before me John Priest consul of the United-States of America for San Juan del Sur and the dependencies thereof, per- sonally came and appeared Caleb Thurlow a citizen of the United- Statea and resident in the port of San Juan del Sur, having been out- raged by the authorities of the port on the morning of the 8th. of august 1.858. · I hereby enter this note of protest accordingly to serve and avail me hereafter if found necessary. · Attesst.
