Juan del Sur having been outraged by the authorities of the port on the morning of the 8th. August 1858. I hereby enter this note of protest accordingly to serve and avail me hereafter if found necessary. Attested. J. Priest (Seal.) U. S. Consul- [Appended Certificates of J. Priest] I. John Priest Consul of the United States do hereby certify that I was-called to the house of Mr. Green on the morning of the 8th. of August 1.858 upon my arrival, his house was surrounded by a body of armed soldiers headed by the acting Govr. Faustino and the police of the town. I enquired the cause of the dificulty and was informed that Mr. Green and Mr. Thurlow were prisoners - Neither of the parties had committed offences of any kind. I saw the Gov. take them to the quartelle and they were detained prisoners for twenty four hours, when capt. Kelly of the United Ship Saranac came on shore, I informed him of the above that Green & Thurlow had been made prisoners without any cause or provication and on the following morning Monday, he took measures to release them. First requesting it as a favour to allow them to return to their homes until the arrival of the Commandant, being refused his request he then informed the Governor, that he would give him one hour and a palf to release in that time he Capt. Kelly would release them himself at the experation of the aforesaid time Capt. Kelly pro- ceded to lane [sic] the mariners from the ship and when within bolo from the shore, the parties were set at liberty, and up to the present day there has been no charge against them. By this public instrument of declaration and protest Be it made mani- fest unto all whom these presents shall come or may concern that on the 10th. day of August one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight before me John Priest Consul of the United States of America for San Juan del Sur and the dependencies thereof personally came and appeared Caleb Thurlow a citizen of the United-States now resident in this place, who duly noted and entered with me the said Consul his protest for the uses and purposes hereafter mentioned, to wit, The day of the date hereof, before me the said
