It is necessary that I should communicate with the Govt. of Costa Rica without much father delay. Please respond to this point as soon as convenient; and at the same time communicate to me whatever information you may have which you think will be useful to me. Should the Columbus touch at at [sic] San Juan del Sur, please tell Mr Priest to forward the letters and despatches for me with- out delay, as I shall wait them with great anxiety. I will communicate with you again as soon as I hear from you. This letter will be handed to you by Dr. Cole who has a good knowledge of the character and con- dition of this country.

Letter to The Seranac

August 10th. 1858. By this public instrument of declaration and protest, be it known and made manifest unto all to whom these presents shall come or may con- cern, that on the 10th. day of August one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight, before me John Priest Consul of the United-States of Amer- ica for San Juan del Sur and the dependencies thereof, personally came and appeared Michael Green a citizen of the United States now resident in this place, who duly noted and entered with me the said Consul his protest, for the uses and purposes hereafter mentioned, and now on this day to wit. The day of the date hereof before me the said Consul, again comes the said Green and requires me to . extend his protest, also comes Sheperd Shaw, William Eaton and V. R. Bristol all of whom being by me duly sworn on the Holy Evangellist of Almighty God, did freely and solemnly declare depose and state as follows. - That on the morning of the 8th. of August 1858, Sunday, my house was surrounded and my door barred by .one armed force, headed by acting Govr. Faustino Arellano, at the moment of these surrounding my house there were four americans in it besides my own family, namely V. R. Bristol, S. Shaw, Caleb Thurlow and W. Eaton, Faustino the Govr. demanded the person of Caleb Thurlow. I answered him that should not allow an armed force to enter my house, I made application to the Governor to allow me to go and see the American Consul Mr. Priest, he refused my request to see the said Consul and ordered his sol-diem to die on the spot before they should permit any
