of the "indignation meeting" which -Messrs Martinez Mora & Belly held so mysteriously in Rivas. I shall leave here in two days for New- York & expect to be able to place your despatch in the hands of the department at Washington as early as the 28th. of this month. I shall try to return in August, but it may be that I shall not be back until the month of September. It may be that before my return there may be disturbances in the country caused by the arrival of Walker or from other causes, and if this should be the case, may I · not beg of you to extend to my wife the protection and assistance she will need - However, I am of opinion that there will be no difficul- ties of the kind I allude to, and that the affairs of Nicaragua will be propperly and speedily adjusted by our government. Allen & Webster came to Granada a few days ago, bringing $50,000 - thinking to get the Transit. They did not succeed and are now in this place on their way to New York. Jerez is here on his way to Washington, He takes the Treaty. - Cass Yrisarri, - He seems to be sanguine that a new treaty will be formed, of a character full of advantages to the U. S. as the one that has been lately refused. He takes with him ample power to treat upon Transit & to make a 'l'reaty with the U. S. I think if they had searched through all Nicaragua, there could not have been selected a man more favorable to our interests than Jerez. Yours Faithfully
