No. 2634 1858 June 22, L. SCHLESINGER, SAN JUAN DEL SUR, [NICA- RAGUA] TO M. B. LAMAR, MANAGUA, [NICARAGUAJ 89 Copy. Steamer "Columbus" San Juan del Sur. June 22 .. 1858. Genl. Mirabeau B. Lamar Managua Sir: By newspapers account in the United States I saw that you were under the erroneous impression of my having intentionnally mis- led you to the belief that the Cass-Yrisarri Treaty was with me when I last time left Nicaragua for the United States. If I ma<le such a statement to you it was because I firmly believed it; neither had I any reasons to suspect base conduct when no necessity called for it. So much impressed was I by the Nicaraguan Government & assurances that I had the treaty with me, that on my arrival at San Juan del Porte, finding no other conveyance to Aspin- wall for to be in time there for the New York Steamer of the 19th., I did not hesitate a moment to risk in a small Indian canoe four days and four nights paying $175- out of my own pocket, and all this to be with the treaty not behind. - Only in New York I found the farce which was played - but I set all right in Whashington.
