My dear Cyrinus.
Our mutual friend Dickson is with me and as I have no secrets from him on Central American affairs he has kindly volunteered to act as my "amanuensis for the nonce for if there is any one thing that I hate to do more than another it is writing with my remaining crippled arm. I saw your last letters to your Uncle and Mr. ·white and I presume they have informed you of their effect here, hence I shall say nothing about them, excepting the hope that you have not had occasion to show· Mr White's confiden- tial instructions to you, for I am convinced that nothing short of the most urgent necessity would induce you to do so and even then, it is hard that he the most valuable friend you have in this city, should ·suffer for the fault of Mr Stebbins, which by the by Mr Stebbins denies having committed. Mr White was at first disposed to consider your letter in the light of a threat and felt somewhat indignant thereat, but the representations of George Dickson and myself, convinced him that he entirely misunderstood you, that so far from being a threat, it was a regret, that such an occasion might arise and that if Mr Stebbins had repudiated your connection with the Company, thus placing you in the light of an imposter, you certainly had just cause 'of complaint, but that you are the last man to either threaten or betray so true a friend. He is now satisfied. Like the Roman-youth rather burn your right-hand off, than give him just cause of complaint, for he is no •Common man or ordinary friend. I suppose ere this you have received your :appointment as Baggage-agent - accept the place for it will lead to something more profitable. I wrote you a long letter/ 8 the Steamer
