Daniel J. Toler, New-Jersey- emigrated to Texas in 1836- Now Post Master Genl. 1844 After the fall of Zaccateccas, the orily obstacle to the complete success of Santana's designs, was the subgagation of Texas. Coahuila & Texas resisted; The congress was in session in May or June 1835 at Monclova. Coss came there with troops; the congress knowing that he had been sent to disperse them, fled. The members fled in various directions,-The Governor, Augustin Viesca, and his council, com- posed of Dr. James Grant, and others, fled for Texas, to establis his govermt at Bexar. He arrived at or near the Riogrande; by a mili- tary force stationed at the pass to intercept him; and was taken back to the Punta de Lampaza; (this was in June) They weer removed thence to the City of Monterrey, where they remained on parole of honor, until december, where they were ordered into close confinemt by Santana. In 10 days they started for Mexico under an escort of 22 tnen & officers; and at the Rinconada, a pass in the mountains, they bribed their bribed [sic] the guard and took· the officers prisoners; They pushed for Texas taking the officers with them some leagues & then liberated them. ( Milam and Cameron were taken prisoners in the first instance with them & braking their parole, made their escape, Milam made his way to Texas, and was discovered by the americans at Goliad & participated in taking that place) Viesca, Milam & the other prisoners when taken to Monterrey, repeatedly demanded a trial or hearing, which not being granted nor likely to be obtained, Milam felt justified in breaking his parole. This was the cause of confing the rest of them- Viesca, Yrala his Seery. of State, Grant and Cameron came on to Texas after making their escape. Alderete, the Land Commissioner, was also with them; he had been captured at the same time the Govr. & Grant were- Viesca, Yrala and Alderete came to Sanphilpi ; 21 Grant and Cameron went to Bexar and joined the troops at where
