small scattering parties were met, with which there was some skirmish- ing-- The Texan forces kept daily dimimihing, and in two months the expedition closed, 5 Indians killed 6 prisoners women & children. The loss on the part of the Whites was one killed not however by the Indians, but by our own men; and one wounded by the Indians- . In October 1835 a man, James Long was killed whilst survying; [sic] in the same month a house was attacked at the three forks of the Little River- There were two men and a woman in the house- 20 Indians-the Indians sat [sic] one of the houses on fire- the woman got on the roof & threw off the boards to keep it from setting fire to the dwelling house- 2 Indians were killed- no injury to the family- ' February 1836- Two waggons with two families were moving upon Little River- the Indians came upon them in a friendly manner at first- but soon attacked them; one man fled; the other stood and repulsed the enemy-with 2 or 3 indians killed- March 1836-an attack was made by 60 Indians on 6 white men, who stood their ground & repulsed the foe without sustaing any loss- at St Gabriel _25 miles from Austin- Capt Bay [?] The Indian troubles and the mexican Invasion caused the settlemts on both sides of the Brazos gave way and retired into the more popu- lous parts- There were constant skirmishes on the River· that summer between the whites & indians- In the fall of 1836-one company was stationed in Milam Co. for the protection of that section, Capt. Thos. H Baron-one half of the compny [sic] was stationd [sic] under Baron at the Falls of the Brazos and one half 3 forks of the little river where a fort was erected (Smith fort) the men commanded by Lieut. Curtis- The first skirmish they had, was an anction [sic] of Janry. 1837-at Elm Creek, 13 men being despatched to follow up a trail under the command of Geo- B. Ereath- the indiEJns were overtaken 100 in number; Capt. Ereath lost two of his men, killed 10 of the enemy & made good his retreat. The next action was in April 1837- 5 Indians stampeded the horses in the prarie in site of fort Smith, then under the command of Capt. Dani. Munroe- the indians made their escape, the whites being too weak to follow- 2 weeks after this the Indians killed 5 men men [sic] with 2 waggons & the oxen left dead in their yokes- the indians made their escape- This caused fort Smith to be abandoned, & the families moved to the falls of the Brazos- the men killed, John Hughs, Clai- born Neil, Aron Cullens, David Farmer and a Mr. Bailey- Sundry depredatus were committed about the same time in Robensons Colony- A Skirmish took place in three hundred yds of the station at the Falls of the Brazos- James Corral was killed, and one Indian- the Indians were pursued by men from the grarison but not overtaken- This was in the month of May 1837- During May & June there
