You and mvs~lf had ·a conversation in the summer of 1842 in the St. Charles Ex~hangc in New Orleans, at which place we were both boarders- At that time I was consul .at the port of New Orleans for Texas- I held my appointment under Genl. Houston- as was natural between two Txians f sic] our principal conversation was in relation to our adopted Country- her men me:is- ures &c &c. During our conversation I alluded to an' occurrence which hru:1 then recently happened between yourself and Genl. Hunt at 0111- veston. This led to a further intervew between you and myself and in that interview, I told you I was in the offiee of Genl. Houston at Austin in the winter of 1842, and that I heard Gen. Houston, call tM attention of several who were present to an article in one of the Aus- tin papers signed "A"- which artirle commented severely on you in regard to the Santa Fe expedition and other matters.- I also told you that Genl. Houston remarked "that Lamar would make the writer of that article fight if he eould find him out-" To this remark of Genl. Houston Genl. Hunt replied saying "if Lamar demands tht author of that article I authorise any and all of you present to refer him to me- If he wants a fight I am his man"- This was the sub- stance if not the exact words of Genl. Hunt- After this Genl. Hunt left the office of Genl. Houston, and soon after his departure, Genl. Houston called on me to bear in mind what Genl. Hunt hnd said in reg-ard to the author- ship of the article before referrd to signed "A"-When Genl. Hous- ton called on me to remember the remarks of Genl. Hunt, there were several present, and amogst [sic] The rest, was. the secty of state Dr. Anson Jones-- Some time after this conversation in Genl. Houston's office in Austin, I met Dr. Jones and Prest Houston in this place- This was in March 1842. About this time Dr. Jones handed me a note which you had addre,;sed him in regard to the au- thorship of the article signed "A"- To that note of yours Dr. Jones showed me his reply 9 in which he said ''he referred you to Genl. Hunt for the authorship"- I do not know whether you recd. that note from Dr. Jones or not- This is all I know of the matttr, and I give it to you as nearly in writing as I expres,;ed it in our verbal conversa- tion to the best of my knowledge Yr: obt: Svt. P. Edmunds.
