the city of Mexico, for the Commissioners which may be appointed by the Government, as also protection during their stay in Mexico, and for all persons charged with despatches from this Government for the Commissioners, and from thence to this Government, as is usual among nations in such cases. 4th. You will require that no Mexican troops shall cross the Rio Grande during the term of the armistice. You will stipulate relative to parties that may be sent out in pursuit .of robbers and Indians; being careful that no tacit acknowledgement be made to the right of keeping up parties of soldiers between the Nueces and Rio Grande. 5th. You will stipulate, under the established principles, relative to any offence against the armistice by soldiers or citizens, and the nature of compensation for injuries, and punishment of parties so offending, and until redress be refused by the party offending, the armistice shall not be considered broken. Copy of the first rough sketch of the proposed armistice. 1st. There shall be an armii,tice between 'fexas and Mexico. 2d. This armistice shall continue for one year from the date of the 11porobation of this convention by the supreme Government of Mexico. 3d. Texas shall appoint two Commissionerfl, with full and ample powers, who shall, with the least possible delay, proceed to the capitol of Mexico, there to treat with Commissioners to be appointed by the S11preme Government of the Republic of Mexico,· for the adjustment of all differences between Texas and Mexico. For which reason, the term of the armistice provided for in the preceding article, shall be considered as comprehending, besides the year mentioned, all such further period as may be consumed in the negociation. 4th. The Supreme Government of the Republic of Mexico guar- antees security and protection to the persons of such Commissioners as shall be appointed by Texai::, in their transit to and from the capitol of Mexico, and during the period which they remain within the terri- tory of the Mexican Republic, as is usual in all similar cases. ,5th. During the existence of the armistice, Mexico shall not keep any troops on the eastern or left side of the Rio Grande, nor shall Texas keep any on the west or right side of the Rio Nueces. 6th. Should any depredations be committed by the troops or citi- zens of either party, immediate notice shall be given by the suffering part~ to the government of the others, with a demand for redress. 7th.
