times when a man named Sinc!lair, from Houston, shot the Mexican in the head.- Mexicans now fired upon the Americans with their artillery until dark, when the Americans started to ·retreat thro' the pass, where they were oposed by cavalry; they then climed the mountains; when they got over the mountain, got into a cornfield, where they heard the enemy's cavalry, who came upon them; Jordan waited until they came in 20 •steps when he ordered his men to fire, & after firing their guns & pistoles the mex- fled loosing 40 killed & wouded; one American was killed; marched the next day, when the mexicans followed us; when they came in sight, Mr. Mustard, dismounted & leaving his horse fled to the mountains, & never been heard of since. - . Mexicans got up pretty close; a man named Grisenger, a dutch tailor of Austin, his horse broke down; he took off the bridle & saddle & shouldering them followed on foot; he was advised to throw them away or the Mexicans would catch him; they caught him & took him to Ariste; who enquird about the number of the Americans; Grisenger told him that there were 90 or· 100 ; Ariste followed us no further ; we ·came on in safety to Laredo, where we were joined by Saguine- Ariste told the dutchman to go home, & that he need not come to Mexico again to fight, that he Ariste was going to Texas to chastise them; Ariste gave him $10 - & dismissed him - At Laredo we met Saguine with 100 Americans; staid there 2 days; went down to Mier; met Fisher with 1 or 200 men; staid 2 or 3 days when Ariste ordered us to leave the banks of the Riogrande & return home; none were allowed to stay except some merchats who went to Matamoras to get pay for their good; which they never got. - When we crossed the Riogrande it was about Clay Davis', we caught a Mexican 2 Spies, took them to China, tried them and shot them.
