Lamar returned to the Govt. and resumed his duties one or two days after Kinny's arrival at Austin. Lamar was soon satisfiect of Kinny's innocence; and empowered said Kiney to cultivate frindly negociations & intercourse betwen the Americns on the Border & the mexicans; and it was [sic] measure that lead to the peace and harmony that subsisted on the western borJer during his administration - Had not Lamar taken this course, Kinney would have 29 forced to abandon his position; and thus would Texas have lost the only claim of occu- pancy to that portion of the country - - In 1841 - a Band of lJOldiers was sent by the Mexican Govt. into this portion of the country to prevent contraband trade - They made an assault on Refugio, (in may) killed a few men, robbed the place and bore off several Citizens as prisoners - Thro' Kinney's exertions these [c] apti ves were restored - When Ariste was notified by Lamar thro' Col. Kinney, that these were unoffending Citizens & not soldiers, he had them at once restored; and the depredating party punished - A friendly feeling at this time prevailed; Corpus Christi continued to flourish, until Lamar went out of office - Shortly after he went out, the Ame[ri]cans commeced depredations on the Mexi- cans and also on Kinny's premisis - No efforts being made by the New administration to suppress these things, a system of retaliation was commenced by the Mxirans - Vascus prepared to invade the Coun- try. Kinny, apprized of his designs notified the president of the fact some Three weeks before the invasion- He sent q runner to the seat of Govt. for this purpose Notwithstandng this direct intelligence, the president neglected to take any steps toward meeting the invader - Bascus came accord- ingly. The Txan Govt. was unprepared - Bascus entered with 800 at Bexar - Contrary to the order of Ariste, he took off a large quan- tity of Goods from that place. At the same time Col. Balaro left Mata- . mora[s wi] th 350 [ ?] m fen l - Kinney got news of his movmts, and succeeded in capting [sic] 3 spies; he captured them himself with- out letting his men know of it lest they should become alarmed at the invasion - Balaro got to Golind, took that place, thence to the Mis- sion Refugio- A detachmt of Balaro's force capturd & killed, Carnes and 4 men & took two µrisoners: both of which .were released thro' Kinny's influence This [wa11 ?] at San patricio [sic] - Cameron was also taken prisoner, but escaped; & apprised Kinny of the movmts of the enmy - Balaro committed no depradation, and retired without molesting the people at Goliail or Refugio - one of the two men taken at San patrido was carried to Mexico. and it was nearly a year be- fore he was released - This wai; accidntal - From this time for- ward, Kinny kept the Govt. constantly informed of what was going on - at his own expence - [Endorsed] Information from Col.
