KINNEY - CORPUS CHRISTI"; DIFFICULTIES BE1'WEEN MEXICANS AND TEXANS, 1840-2, IN THE VICINITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI2 6 Information derived from Col. Kinney - Corpus Christi. Ormsbey, after leaving Yerbey went towards the Rio Grande, in [illegible ] of Matamoras, with 17 men - At the place called the Para, near which he met 60 or 70 Mexicans; a fight ensued; 3 americans killed; 5 mexicans killed & 16 wounded, under the com- mand of Capt. Remires - Ormsby's party were dissolved and scattered. A party of 20 men under Capt. Hull; left San Patricio, towards Riogrande; met 7 mexicans, all of whom were captured & killed near San Patricio - He ,went on towards the Riograncle, & near the Salt Lakes met 60 or 70 mexicans; the mexicans saw the Americans first; kept out of their sight until night, when the Mexicans attempted to steal the Amcn's horses - but failed - next day both parties pre- pared for fight - but neither getting the advantage, they retired withot any conflict - it was a stand off -- The Mexicans retreated towards riogrande, [sic] - Hull pursued them; captured rn and killed them - These were all [tr] aders, coming to Corpus Chrsti to trade under the President's proclamatn- it happend in 1840 - Hull returned to Corpus Christi & disbanded: joined the Santefe Expedi- tion & was killed by the Indians - He was an Englishman The only party (robbing one) in the lower country now, (after Hull left) was Capt. Miles - he had a small force (Snodgrass was with him) - what he did is not known; he was there six or seven months- A force was now stationed at San Patricio, (east side of the River) under this said Miles, in the ranging i:ervise - Miles becoming odious, was displacd & join the company as a private; was succeeded by Capt. Karnes, (a scokhman) - the companv continued there until the spring of 1841 (May or June) when rthrvl were atfackeil by the Mexicans, when Karnes, snodgrass, Miles, White and one other were killed. There were only 8 at this point at the time: the balance of .the compny was at Kinney's ranch - Marvin & Wells were taken prisoner; cameron made his ei::cape - He rmegible l was killed in Mrexico l Col. Bell was now commissioned (spring of J 841) to prc- tect the West - see his commission and orilers - It was Bell who turned out MiJei:: & placed Karnes in command - it was a few months after this. th11t they wne picked r ?l up - Marvin thro' Col.
