I shall not visit Washingtun, unless it be necessary to meet you at that, or some other point, in the prossicution of our business ar- rangements. My family has suffered greatly from sickness - which has prevented both my visit to :Mexico & to Washington heretofore. A new impulse has been given to the trade from this place to eastern Mexico in consequence of the reopening of some of the Mines at Santa Rosa which bid fare to become highly profitable. I expect to see them in a few days, and if the prospect is as flattering as repre- sented I will immediately close with a proposition which has been made me by the owner, or rather part owner, of Dr. Long's mine. What ever I do in Mexico you may consider yourself as interested iu if you choose, in the e\'ent of our business arrangements being con- sumated. I shall return immediately if I find every thing favor- able, when you will again hear from me fully, Yours truely N. B. John A. Veatch. I would be glad if, while you are in Washington, you would have the kindness to enquire at the Quarter Master Generals office, and make some explanation, should they be required, relative to the amounts I paid for my predecessor, as a. a. q. m. at Laredo. The papers are put up to themselves, relative to these amounts. and you will recognize them by their all having your approval. I[t] will only be a moments work & may greatly aid me. J.A. V.
