No. 2390 184&. June 17, M. B. LAMAR LAUEDO, TEXAS '1'0 C. J. HELM [MONTEREY, M~XIC0] 11 Leiut Chas J Helm Ade & aaa G. [sic] Sir Laredo Texas June 17th. 1848 I have recd. orders No. 156 announcing the rlefinite settlement of Peace, and also ordering "The Arkansas & Texa;; Volunteers to repair to Comargo, where they will be mustered out of service" I am preparing for the execution of this order, so far as my command is concerned, with as much despatch as practicable; but some delay must necessarily result from the fact that Leiut Bee is now absent with a large detail in the discharge of some collectorial duties which have been assigned him, Another detail is also absent, I hav•: despatched curriers after both parties, and as soon as they arrive I shall be in readiness to move for Comargo. Before leaving here, however, I will respectfully 11uggest to the General, the propriety of not breaking up this post at the present moment, Indians are known to be in this section of County, seek- ing to do mischief, and it would seem to me to be imprudent to leave Laredo exposed to their depredations. It is very difficult to restrain the Indians entirely; but the prmience of a Military force here is coQ· siderable protection without which the place will probably be doomed to calamity similar to those which it experienced for years under tht> Mexican Government. In a letter which I had the honor to receive from Genl. Wool, he suposes that my Company was engag-ed for the War; and possibly this may be the reason of itR being ordered out of the service, I would, however state that the Company was enrolled for twelve months only under Authority from the Governor of Texas, for frontier protection, and was subsequently attached to Genl. Wool divif>ion, [sic] to which we ha.ve hitherto made our official returns, Under the circumstances I would adviRe the continuence of the Company here until the expera- tion of its term of service, which will be on the 8th. October next by which time other arranv.ements may be made for frontier protection- So far as my indevidual feelings are involved I would greatlJ prefer being mmitered out of i;;nvire immediately; and i;;hould the Genl. determine to continue the Company at the post until -its tenn expirPs, I 11hall be contrained to ask for ~ leave of abi;;ence. inasmuch al! mv health i11 not good anrl I 11tanrl in m~ed of rest. Under the Command of Leiut FPe the po11t will 11nffer nothing by my absence,, Be pleased to pre~ent my view;; anrl wishes to thP Genl. and also my sincere deAirc for hi11 nroi, ppritv 1rnrl h11nnineR!I · I havve the honor to be very respectfully Your Obt.
