At an Election held in the Counties of Nueces & San Patricio, on Monday the First day of the present Month, you were elected to Represent the Counties of Nueces & San Patricio, in the House of Representatives of the State of Texas-You having re- ceived 521 Votes, and H. J. Levy 59 votes, your majority over the next highest candidate being 462 votes- you will therefore proceed to the next meeting of the Legislature of the State of Texas- and after qualifying- proceed to enter upon the discharge of your duties- J. Benton Johnson (Seal) Chief Justice .N. C. No. '2362 1847 Dec. 11, W. G. RUNNELS GALVESTON, [TEXAS] TO M. B. LAMAR, AUSTIN, TEXAS• Galveston December 11. 1847 Dear General I am happy to be informed that you have been returned from nueces County as Representative. I hope you will be able to make at least .a formidable show of opposition to Houstons election to the Senate. If there are but ten member~ of the Legislature against him that opposition should by all means be made to appear in the· election- I know not who you can make the most available, but that individual be he who he may should be run: From all that I can learn there will be in the Legislature a respectable opposition if not formidable. It is humiliating to so large and respectable a minority of the Stnte secumb [sic] to so great a tyrant, without puting to test his real strength. I make these suggestions to you because I think you will give to them such consideration as they are worth, and re- ceive them as coming from a friend. My nephew D. S. Terry Esqr is a candid::ite for the office of district atty, he is a young man of promise, and the office would be servicable to him as an introduction to the profession, the salary can be of com:equence to no one. If high- toned chivalry and unquestionable integrity serve as a recommendation he has them, If found consistent with your feelings I shall be happy for you to assist him.
