Major Wilder here on his way to Monterey-and am just in time to save your money. he informs me that funds are at Camargo to pay off the company--everytning is arranged. you had better leave on the 1st which will give two days at Camargo, which will be necessary. all my business being conclud~d I would return but I really have not the health, and shall probably go to the mouth of the River if I can do it in time. Two hundred waggons leave here tomorrow with a strong escort. for Monterey-it is almost certain that there is a large force awaiting it on the road- I have not as yet i:;ucceeded in seeing a Paper with the account of the battle of Mexico but if possible will steal one to send you, in a few words the result is as follows- Scott took all the out works as we heard at Monterey but did not enter the City.-he proposed an armistice to Santa Anna who -accepted and commissioners are at work to settle upon a Peace- Santa Anna acknowledges his defeat but declares that he had all in readiness to defend the City to the last the truce extends to ,28 leagues arround the city-a had move will that armistice turn out depend upon it-great dissatisfaction is expressed by Scotts officer that the City was not stormed- our loss, 1000 Killed and wounded-Mexicans supposed to be 6,000- Col Butler of South Carolina heads the list of the Killed-a noble gallant soldier- Sonth Carolina lost half of her regiment-Killed and wounded (but two hundred and forty odd in the fight) Capt Thorn- ton of the Dragoons.
