On his withdrawal I shall apprehend many difficulties. The whole country will become organized into bands of Robbers, and crimes of every species must prevail. In anticipation of difficulties which may arrise upon this frontier I have suggested to the Governor the pro- prity [sic] of having a strong force organized for its protection I have also solicited the command of such force, beleving that I E-hould be able with it to do much good upon the borders; The importance of a strong military presence on the Rio Grande, is, I have no doubt, well understood by yourself & should you be call'd to fill the office of Gov• ernor (which we are all laboring here to effect) your success will be regarded as a sure guarentee for protection in this quarter Should the present Executive order the raising of 5 or 6 or morP companies for frontier protection I should like to receve your aid in my obtaining command of the same as far as you can consistently ex- tend it- Dr. Veatch, who will cooperate with me to this end will fully explain my views. Capt: Lamar Sir
I have just arrived from San Fernando from which place I had to :fly to save my life. I was in Santa Rosa with a stock of goods and haveing occasion to go to San Antonio I left my clerk there and started for San Fernando intending to proceed direct to Bexar but upon my arrival at S. Fernando I found the whole country up in arms, all the military Officers belonging to the frontier towns of the State of Coahuila having returned with orders from Genl: Urea to establish the Guerrilla system through that State. I [sic] consequence of whi<'li order a considerable force was assembled at Rio Grande for the purpose of murdering and plundering of americans who come within their reach. I am satisfied from the best information I could gather at San Fernando that they intend making an attack upon this place believeing the the r sic] force now here is about to leave and knowing that there are several merchants here their intention is to plunder them I deem it my duty as an american citizen to give you this information. Yours Respectfully G. Van Ness [Addressed] Genl: M. B. Lamar Laredo .. A. L. S.
