PAPERS OF MIRABEAU BUONAPARTE LAMAR

in the hands of Coln. Hays to have forwarded from San Antonio - I hope you have recvd both. In persuance of your suggestion I have requested the President to authorize me to call out three Companies for the protection of Larado San Patricio &c The Indians are as yet quiet in this region but I apprehend some difficulty with them this next fall. I hear it rumored a short time since that you would be a candidate 'for the Legislature? I hope it may be so as I should like to see you here next winter I have declined being a Candidate again as my private affairs needs all my attention. Van Zandt, Darnell Wood, Robison (of Sabine), & Miller are all Candidates-• at least it is said that Miller is out- I know the others are. I think that either Miller or Van could be elected easily if but one should run as it is the Con- test is between Van & Wood- The vote I find if. n] the west will be divided between Van and Miller - if Miller was out of the way Van Zandt would get a very large majority in the West & East ·woods main strength lies in old Montgomery Liberty & Harris with what Scurry can give him in Red River. I regret that Miller and Van Zandt are both running as they will weaken each other & Wood, may in that way slip in. He is a great dog. I am satisfied that the best chance to beat him is with Van Zandt. Judge Webb and others in this region have written to Miller advising him to with draw and he may do so. Hays will receive orders to move on and report to Genl Scott for duty about the time he arrives at Genl Taylors Head Quarter- This I _g-ot from Washington City last night. We have but lii;tle news here. I would send you some news papers but I fear you will not even get this letter Your friends here are all we[ll] Yours very Truly Henderson To Genl MB Lamar No. 2343 1847 Aug. 21, J. P. My Dr. Sir

I wrote 88 you a few days since. Since then I received your communication of the 5th. Inst. The last nights mail brought to me directions from the Secy of War to send Coln. Hays to the mouth of the Rio Grande from whence he will be sent to Vera Cruz to report for duty, with his command, to Genl. Scott. They seem to have forgotten in Washingto:ri City that Coln. Hays had been previously ordered to report to Genl Taylor &c. In consequence of that oversight I shall be compelled to send orders to the Coln. by ex- press which will convey this to you together with authority to enroll 11 A. L. s. "No. 2342.
