Head Qrs. near Monterey July 23 1847. Your favor of the 10th 83 was received day before yester-

Dear Sir,

day and I have had some conversation with the Genl. on the subject which you present. In case he makes a forward movement, he desires to employ your services & those of your company and will take meas- ures to do so. He supposes there will be no difficulty in inducing the company or the greater portion of it to prolong its service a few months with the certaintv of active service. A forward movement if made wilL commence in all September, or perhaps not befoe [sic] the 1st of october. We havee [sic] news from Mexico to the 26th of June, at which date Genl Scott was still at Puebla, expecting soon to move on the Capital. Unless his advance has been arrested by negotiations, he must now be in Mexico & we expect hourly to hear so. A letter had been received by the Mexican Govt. from Mr. Buchanan of a concilia- tory character, & we judge from the papers that a communication of some kind has been opened between the Govt. & Genl. Scott's Hd. Qrs. rendering negotiations rat~r probable. Of course a forward movement in this direction will depend upon the complexion of things at the Capital. If an armistice is declared, we must be still for some months. Reinforcements are joining the Genl. very slowly & there. is much sickness at Saltillo & below on the Rio Grande. Here we have few troops but they are quite healthy. The country is perfectly tranquil & the crops good. The General desires me to present his best respects. In the event of active operations he will be glad to avail himself of your services as above stated, and will take timely [ ?) measures to relieve :your company at Laredo if it wi,;ht>FI to join him - I remain with high respect
