March and 23rd. of May. I regret that accidents haw prevented you from holrl- ing elections for local county officers in Larado as I think it a mat- ter of some importance to the State to organize &c in the sections of our Counties bordering- on Mexico. I shall ns soon as an opportunity is afforded (which I think will he in a day or two) write to the Chief Justice of Nuaces County and direct him to act upon your suggestion & se~d you an order for the election leaving the time when it will be held blank which I hope will reach you in time to organize &c. I ap- plied to the President early last Spring for leave to raise a regiment of Mounted men for the protection of our frontier and have them mus- tered into the ~ervice of the U. S. Only three of the companies of the regiment called for in Octr last to senc for the War in Mexico having
