No. 2336 1847 July 10, M. B. LAMAR LAREDO, [TEXAS] TO W. W. S. BLISS, [NEAR MONTEREY, MEXICO] 78 Private. Laredo, 10th. July 1847. Major Bliss Dear Sir, Having understood that General Taylor will probably make a forward movement in the ensuing autumn, I beg leave, through you, to tender my services to him in any capacity in which he may think that I can be useful. My sole object is to be useful, and to avoid inactivity; and if no particular station or duties can be as- signed me, I shall be more than contented with the privilege of ac- companying the army, and participating in its toils and dangers, as a private individual, responsible to the General only and requiring for &ny services I which r sic l may render, no other compensation than such supplies from the public Stores as may be necessary to a reason- able share of personal comfort. Forage for two horses and rations for myself and servant, will probably be sufficient; and if these can be fur- nished me, I ask nothing beyond. - The leave of absence which was granted me, I have not been able to avail myself of, in consequence of the almost indiiipensible necessity of my presence in this place. I am now arranging for the extension of the jurisdiction of Texas over this part of her territory, and shall hold an Election in a few days, for county officers under the Constitution and laws. The people are far from beini reconciled to the change, and probably very few will appear ,at the polls. Tranquility prevails; with the exception of occasional robbing by the Mexicans. The Indians are giving us but little or no trouble. My Command is in good health & condition; the most of .the men would like to join in General's onward ma.rch, as an inde- pendent Spy Company, and I would be equally pleased to lead them, if sueh a thing is desirable or allowable. - · Yours respectfully M. B. Lamar. P. S- My Lieutnats, Dr. ,Jno. A. Veatch and Hamilton P. Bee may prob- ably make some endeavors to get into the public service; and if so, I take great pleasure in recommnding them both as being worthy of th,? hi~hest condifnce - MBL.
