Your letter of April 21st. was duly received and laid be- fore the Commanding General who desires me to express his thanks for the communication of your views. He is now waiting the result of operations in the interior before taking any special measures in this quarter. I enclose a Monterey Pioneer containirg a translation of Genl. Canalizo's official report of the battle of Cerro Gordo, in which the Mexicans seem to have been completely routed. Cerro Gordo is 44 miles from Vera Cruz on the road to Mexico. Though it is now nearly a month since the battle we are without further authentic ad- vices from the interior.
