my request to rejoin the army. Should an augmentation of force take place here I think I may with some degree of justice solicit the com- m[a]nd. Should [sic] concur with me in oppion [sic] both as to the measure and the manner of raising a force for this place - would it not be prudent to start the thing at once by forwarding me the requisite authority, together with a letter recomendatory of the plan to Genl. Taylor? I could forward them at once to head quarters and the mat- ter be got under way immediately. I have apprised Genl. Taylor of the state of things here und made the same suggestions with regard to the encrease of force. From the tenor of the instructions from head quarters upon my taking charge of this post I consider myself as entirely under your command and therefore apply to you for instructions and authority as above mentioned. 'l'his immediate vicinity is quiet. Good feeling prevails be- twen our people and the Mexicans. Our coming amongst them has given a new impulse to every thing and they seem fully to appriciate the protection our presence affords.
