BEE, CAMARGO, [MEXICO] TO [M. B.] LAMAR, LAREDO, TEXASJ5 8 Camargo, Dec. 5, 1846. My, Dear General- I was glad to hear of your safe arrival and comfortable position in Laredo. Lieut Tilden has proferred to carry letters for you, and I have barely time to say a word. I presume you are out of the world, and as I have no late papers, at my disposal, I will hastlly give you a sketch of what is passing in the busy world, first as to the war, everything denotes that Mexico is arming for the contest. Santa Ana has united all parties and the enthusiasm in his favor and against us is universal he is at San Luis with 20,000 men fortifying- Gen Worth was at Saltillo at the last accounts, Gen. Patterson has gone to Tampico to take command, his force will be from Reg. Volunteers and about 500 Regulars, you are aware that Tampico surrendered without :firing a gun rumor says a large force say 30,000 men will concentrate in a short time there from the United States. Our Navy has had a. little brush. Com Conner led in person an attack on Alvarado, which resulted in a failure, from one of the Steamers with the pricipal [sic] force in tow, having grounded, the Commodore, had crossed over, and standing on the wheel house was exposed to a heavy :fire from a 12 gun battery, he retired from the above cause with- out loss, Com Perry then led an attack on Tabasco- ascending the River 70 miles to Tabasco, capturing several vessels of various sises, and bombarding the Town until it was nearly demolished, the mili- tary prevented the families from leaving, and it is believed many were Killed, :finding that he had punished them enough for the death of Lieut Morris who was the only officer Killed, he returned to the anchor- age off Vera Cruz, they then proceeded to Tampico, but the official account is not published. No news of consequence from the United States, except that the Whigs have carried all the elections. Wright of New York is beat 10,000 votes, Pensylvania, 10,000 Maj for the whigs-&c-the revulsion is very sudden, a letter received here says. Pillsburys majority is 32 votes over Williams- ·
