Democrats just at this time, unless the whigs in N. Y. should take ground against the new constitution which throws every thing to the people. I think it pretty certain that the result of the next presi- dential election depends mainly on the result of this war If the ad- ministration acquires territory enough to pay for the expenses of the war, they will maintain themselves. The tariff question will be quoted in the course of two years by the trade with England. I do not think there is any necessity of your remaining in the army unless you prefer it. You have gained much in this Campaign espe- cially with the Eastern men. Personal quarels and differences among men will soon be merged here in general politics. Moreover, the State will be divided 1850, I think. It will be impossible for us to hang to- gather [sic] after the West gets a sufficient population for a state, which I am confident will be the case in 3 years. It seems there is a wide breach between the Governor and Gen : Houston, the result of which may have some influence on the power of particular men. Indeed, the old rleations [sic] in Texas are fast falling to peices. We may look for new conbinations, (and there will naturally be a reaction in your favor, especially if you do not mix your- self in affairs for the next two or three years. I .am therefore, inclined . to think that, the volunteer service will suit you best for the present. I intend to go to Washington as soon as I can leave the Supreme Court, and if I can further your views there in any respect it will afford me great pleasure. It occurs to me that if the war continues you can get a better position in the army. Houston has views ahead and I believe, if I could see him, I could make him sanction your ap- plication, or at all events keep him quiet. It appears, that we arc to have two, or three years war with Mexico, and if so, the service must be reorganized by the present Congress, which will afford an oppor- tunity for new commissions Write me by the first opportunity, excuse this hasty scrawl, and be- leive me

Yours Truly,
